Very disappointing book. The 2 good things I can say about it1. I've read worse. At least I was able to finish it.2. It's has a good idea of a plotBUT the author was not able to deliver. There was zero thought put into the world building. This post nuclear apocalypse world had coffee makers, refrigerators, sell phones, supermarkets with a whole row on feminine pads to choose from and an alien watching TV! So, most population was gone, government, and police as well but there still was McDonald's, satellite reception and Hollywood was intact and making programs geared for invading aliens. Absurd!Same goes to character building. I wasn't sure if this book was written by a man or a 10 year old for a complete lack of understanding of female psychological makeup and relationships in general. The feelings of both main characters described by the author did not match their actions. It was not a smoothly continuous story either. Several things were mentioned and then totally forgotten and other things were mentioned contradicting the initial statements or one that did not make sense. I got an impression that the author did not even read this book after writing it.

I started with the prequel (Beast Mates 0) which I got for free on a special offer, and so had an idea of what to expect from this book and the ones following it. Mostly mild BDSM and lots of sex involving beastly alien characters and human women. Then I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had more depth to the plot and characters than I had expected. The main and sub plots of the opposing cultures lead to fears on the part of the aliens and the women, getting in the way of the characters having any sort of normal trusting and open relationships at the start, and causing all sorts of misunderstandings and frustrations, leading to a great deal of internal and external tension. A wide range of emotions erupt, most of which is based on fear of loss, or fear of death. Working through those fears is an ongoing process in some ways. There is a mating bond that drives the male beast aliens to overpower the female human they are drawn to with sex - usually BDSM and rough - and to not let anyone else touch the female they are attracted to. Meanwhile, it seems to manage to pair the couples up with someone not only sexually compatible (eventually, and everyone has different notions of what they find fun so that is a bonus) but also either compatible or complimentary in general - leading to happy endings, but not until everyone struggles to find the best way to accomplish reaching that happy ending.these are sort of stand alone books, but not really - if you don't know what is going on in the sub plots you aren't going to really enjoy the later books as much, so I suggest starting at the beginning and going forward from there.this particular one I enjoyed a lot more than some of the others in this series, but they all have their strengths

I read a short intro to this story at the end of the FREE prequel "Virgin Beast Mate (Beast Mates, #0)" - and was hooked! I had to purchase and read this story in order to find out what happens to Rey.Despite being dealt a pretty crappy hand up to this point, she ends up with a wild card in the form of her mate, Jamie, the Alpha Beast. At first, he seems like a complete brute, being very abrupt and rude with Rey, treating her more like an object than a person; especially when he tells her that she cannot take her dog with them to her new home. Of course, he has no idea that the hound isn't just a pet, but is instead her eyes and ears in a dark world. However, he still appears to be something of a jerk, especially from Rey's point of view, who doesn't have the insight into his true feelings that the reader is afforded.Nonetheless, the two start to tenatively nagivate their way through their new relationship and living situation, something that proves none too easy for either of them. Add in some extra drama from outside sources, and it makes for some real interesting times.I found this dystopian world for humans to be rather dreary and depressing. They've apparently blasted themselves at least a few generations backwards as far as living conditions and overall status. The Beasts have things better, but given that they supposedly travelled from light years away to conquer Earth by dominating the humans, they don't seem to be all that technologically progressed. In fact, their homes appear to be much like ours today, including the presence of televisions for entertainment. The inclusion of several human BDSM tendancies on the part of the beasts, while it may make for some spicy love scenes, just seems rather weird and out of place. They come across more like barbarian humans than advanced aliens.Besides these couple of minor drawbacks, however, I found the book to be quite entertaining overall, especially in exploring the connection that develops between Rey and Jamie. I'm also looking forward to reading future volumes in the series, at least the next one, "Wild Beast Mate (Beast Mates, #2)," as I am particularly interesting in learning more about the relationship between Vice and Dewlyn.
