About the Author
Benjamin Lai was originally from Hong Kong, but educated in the UK. He was one of the few Chinese to serve in the British Army as a commissioned officer in the 1980s in both Hong Kong and the UK. Fully bilingual, Benjamin Lai has been interested in World War II and postwar matters for many years but in recent times has developed specialization in Asian military issues with an emphasis on China. Among his previous works are The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Since 1949: Ground Forces, and Hong Kong 1941–1945.

If you are a student of China's PLA, this book is a "must have" for your library. It is comprehensive for organizations and events prior to the April 2017 reorganization.
Comprehensive, thorough, and RECENT surveys of the PLA (not just weapons, but also history, modernizations, and operational concepts) are rather few at this time. As such, this book is a must for those looking to start learning about the PLA!

EVERYONE, and I mean everyone should read and have this book. Be aware of what if really going on with China PLA
A thorough survey of the People's Liberation Army, to include the Air Force and Naval Force. The book covers historical developments, current organization and reforms, weapons development, current weapon systems, and the strategic view from a Chinese perspective. The author lives in Shanghai, China but in my view presents a fair and accurate assessment of the PLA itself. It is interesting to see the Chinese characterization of certain events. The author also wrote the Osprey Elite Series "The Chinese People's Liberation Army since 1949", and some of this book is based upon that material, but updated. I highly recommend this book to anyone building a library to better understand the PLA.
Great insight into the China People Liberation Army (army, air force and navy) from its formation until the present day. The author present a balance view of how The West looks at the PLA and how the Chinese PLA perceived themselves in the modern world. A must have book for any military history enthusiast.
