Wonderful book for all the aficionados of this much derided movie and car racing in the 1970s. Michael Keyser does a fantastic insider job on explaining how the movie came to fruition and how Steve McQueen was addicted to racing. I recommend to everyone his movie "The Speed Merchants" on the 1972 Sport Cars World Championship. Another gem. I gave only four stars to a "French Kiss with Death" because the editing leaves much to be desired.
I saw the film originally back in '73, in England, and I have been collecting versions of it ever since. I had a tape version, and now have the latest DVD version. If and/or when I get a blue-ray player, I am sure I will get that version to.I had been looking to purchase this book for a number of years, but it had been too expensive. This version came along,and I snapped it up. I was never under the illusion that McQeen was anything other than a very troubled man, so the stories of him in the book didn't surprise me, but the meat of the endeavor, i.e to tell the story of, what I humbly submit, is the greatest auto racing film ever envisaged, was achieved with remarkable candor. LeMans is a magnificent race, and whilst quite rightly, in the name of safety, many changes have been made, it remains for me, the apogee of motor racing.
First of all, this book is a great and easy read. I read it within one week. The photos are fantastic. The stories about Steve are wonderful. In saying that, the book is not just about the making of the movie. That's only part of the story. This book gives you a brief history of the following: movies about racing; a small history of the Le Mans race itself; a history of the teams involved in the film - Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lola, Matra, and Porsche; followed by a brief history of the Daytona and Sebring races (featuring Steve); and finally it all comes together in the making of the movie. The personal anecdotes of the drivers involved are quite interesting. For lovers of the movie, the race, and the man himself, this book won't let you down. The photos themselves are worth the purchase price. Plus, this book will look great on your coffee table!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I had a hard time putting it down. I was kind of disappointing to read about Steve's drug use and his infidelity but that's not to be unexpected given his stardom and popularity. I also had no idea of the turmoil in the making of the movie and I was 26 years old when it debuted. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of McQueen.
Excellent read. Informative about Mcqueen, his life, racing and the filming of the movie. Although Le Mans was not as flowing in story line as Gran Prix they both were entertaining. It would have been nice if the McQueen movie went with its "Racing" premise.The sad state of McQueen's personal life was evident and self defeating for Steve. The saddest words of song and pen- What might have been.
This book covers the making of the movie, "LeMans" as well as could be done. It is an intermediate sized paperback with photos in black and white. The descriptions of the details and characters is informative and very interesting for a fan of the 24 hour race or of Steve McQueen the actor, producer and racer.
Read it this past weekend during a snow storm. The LeMans history is wonderful. The author dug into McQueens private life which was great to read. Have happily added it to my Porsche book collection and am pleased to have it.Fast delivery and description of condition was spot on. Great group to deal with!
Upon reading the reviews for this book, I was prepared for the extensive information, history, and background of Le Mans. But, I purchased the book because I was a fan of Steve McQueen. I realized for me there was too much info about Le Mans, before it got to the actual parts of the shooting of the movie. I still haven't finished the book and will continue to plow through it.
