Hormegeddon is an arcane, but important political concept that is complementary with Nassim Taleb's insightful "Antifragile" (and specifically referenced as such by Bonner). Per Wikipedia, Hormesis is: "the term for generally favorable biological responses to low exposures to toxins and other stressors. A pollutant or toxin showing hormesis thus has the opposite effect in small doses as in large doses." Ex. a little government is like your first drink of wine or motivational stress - hermetic, while all lead to declining marginal benefit and - ultimately - "hormegeddon" in larger doses.This book is ultimately a scathing critique of big government, central planning, fiat currency, debt and how the Hayekian "fatal conceit" always ends in tears: "public policy disasters are what you get when you apply rational, small-scale problem-solving logic to an inappropriately broad situation." Government is iatrogenic - from the Greek for "brought forth by the healer" - meaning it suffers from unintended negative consequences. Bonner references one of my favorite economic theorists, Mancur Olson, who wrote "The Rise and Decline of Nations" about how economies grow ever more sclerotic with age. The special interests that Olson describes as "distributional coalitions," Bonner more colloquially refers to as parasitic zombies. One of Olson's major conclusions is vividly reinforced by Bonner: "All mature economies drift towards unproductive activity like old elephants heading for the burial ground."Hormegeddon is the inescapable end-game, always. Bonner's writing style is very entertaining, yet can veer seemingly far off course into detailed lessons from history - be it the German War machine of WWII or France's 'assignat' fiat currency fiasco from the late 1700's, but all are relevant and illustrative. Bonner's credibility is heightened by quotes or citations from a laundry list of relevant intellectual luminaries: Adam Smith, Taleb, Hayek, Olson, Minsky, Schumpeter, Laffer, Twain, Voltaire, Bastiat, Tainter and Niall Ferguson. If you're reading Hormegeddon, you're almost definitionally predisposed to Bonner's conclusions (behavioralists call it "confirmation bias"). If so, here are some additional recommended readings: "The New Road to Serfdom" by Daniel Hannan, "The Great Degeneration" by Niall Ferguson, "Fiat Money Inflation in France" by Andrew Dickson White, "The New Case for Gold" by James Rickards and "The Scandal of Money" by George Gilder. All will have you buying gold bullion and storing canned goods to prepare for the coming Hormegeddon.

While I think it is a scholarly treatment of what our economic policies will most likely lead to, I resent the fact that there is not a single word regarding what the average taxpayer can do to survive any potential impending financial cataclysm. Clearly the author is reeling us in to spend more money to purchase more of his product once we agree that we are "in for it". The author may be entirely right in his assertions but he clearly wants to make a bundle of money from people buying his newsletters and publications. I am delighted that he can purchase a multimillion dollar secluded ranch. More power to him. Unfortunately if he had a deep concern for humanity, he would disseminate the solution to this problem for free. But then he might not be able to support his lavish life style. In the final analysis, his initial spiel says that he will ask for NO MONEY. As usual however he does. If you want to know how to protect yourself from this possible future, you have to pay him more.

This is an outstanding read and a must, must, must, read for anyone who really wants to understand how the sheeple are fooled and controlled by government. It is done with humor, satire, logic and historical evidence to back up what the author is saying. Its a pity Mr. Trump will probably never read it, and every public administrator from the town mayor to the Supreme Court Justices should have to read and understand what is said in this book before they ever are allowed to take office...Ha! that would be the day! Their greed for power and money would never allow it! If anyone believes we have government of the People by the People and for the People they are living a delusion!! Buy several copies of this book and give it as Christmas gifts to all your family and close associates. We will never ever have the founders dream of liberty and freedom until we all understand how we are being, and have been, deceived for at least the past 150 years!!!

A bit of a disappointment, since I love his columns. The same thing is said over and over again.

So-So. Nothing new but Bonners typical verbose writing style. He takes 7 paragraphs to get you one condensed that would have sufficed.

Interesting by-play of theories about how we've reached such a status in our national history, but without any real suggestions about how we get out of the mess...

Although on some levels the author's arguments have merit, the occasional air of superiority, haughtiness and disdain undermine the arguments. When one has a convincing enough argument one doesn't have to stoop to such tactics. That said, the warnings of the book may bear heeding.

Bill Bonner is one of the rare wise men still living on this planet. He is also a brilliant writer. His new book is very well thought and documented, reminiscent of Nicolas Taleb writings. As a matter of fact, the latter happens to be the one who reviewed Bonner's book. Great minds...Thanks to his considerable skills, Bill Bonner is also a very keen investor who has built an impressive fortune, a not so secret fact that he likes to share with his readers.This leads me to wonder why he needs to charge almost 22 bucks for a Kindle edition of his latest book, much more than most famous writers charge for their books.Doesn't too much money lead to hormegeddon?
