I am so happy that I found this book. I am a hospice volunteer, and most of my patients have Alzheimer's. I read this to the later stage patients. The first time I read it, other patients gathered around and sat listening. I couldn't believe it. I used to struggle to find appropriate reading material - and this is perfect. The photos keep my patients interested. For the ones who are speaking, this book had lead to dialogue and many smiles.I love this book for how much interest and joy it brings to my patients, and also the meaningful moments it has given us together.
I purchased this book for my mother. I have not read the book yet, but felt the authors statement that no where in the book does it refer to being for dementia patients was wonderful, because I don't want it to be a reminder. I just wanted her to possibly enjoy reading again. I purchased the kindle version. Unfortunately, on every page it says The Sandy Shoreline: Books for Dementia Patients. A constant reminder of what I am trying to get away from. This is not even the title of the book, Amazon, is there a way you can address this and allow an option to only show the actual title??? Or refund my money, unfair to the author, because it prevents my mother hopefully enjoy it. I would like to update my review after Amazon addresses the problem Thank you.
When I was a child my Mother always read my books first to check their content for me. I'm happy to say that I also checked the content of this book before passing it to an extended family member who suffers from mental challenges. This book has a simple fun story line, but not too simple. It still has a story that the reader can understand and enjoy with out feeling belittled. I really wish I had had copies of this when I had a very close relative who was dying but still wanted to read and was unable to make it through regular books. The only "down" side to this book is that you might need to pack up and take a trip to the beach after your loved one reads it. This book is good for not only those suffering with dementia, but for other adults with cognitive issues. There is nothing baby-ish about it. I'm grateful to have these books available and have been sharing their existence with my friend and other family members.
Mom with dementia loves this book! She has read and enjoyed many times. I know she has missed the ability to read with enjoyment (she can't retain plot lines or character development adequately for "regular" books). Appreciate that the paperback edition doesn't have any mention of Dementia or Alzheimer's. Provides dignity and the pleasure of escape that reading should provide! Good use of memory priming gives the patient an opportunity for success, thus increasing engagement and cognitive stimulation. Also normalized forgetfulness in an appropriate way. The unusual coated(?) paper felt weird to me, to the point that I disliked holding the book, but my mom didn't seem to notice. I will be buying the others in this series for her.
This was a great Christmas gift for my nana with dementia. This is the first book I've found for her that didn't look childish or talk about dementia at all. I've seen books for dementia patients that are so simplistic and my nana is well enough to know when things are being "dumbed down" for her, which makes her want to give up reading! One thing I was worried about when ordering this book was that the pictures would make it look like a children's book, but that was not the case - there are few and they are not distracting. But she absolutely loved this book and was proud to be able to read it on her own!
Disappointed, my fault for not reading how many pages were in the book. It says 44 but the story line is only 33 and large print. Not much for such a high price.
My mom (&I) both love these books. This is the 3rd one my mom has by this author. I highly recommend this book and others by this author. They do not need to be read in order. The books can be read over and over. The author's descriptions are beautiful and highly vivid. We've learned names and facts of animals. The real pictures and illustrations are gorgeous.
Serves a well needed purpose for Dementia patient wondering why she can't read any more. However, the book is extremely thin, which is o.k., but taking that into consideration waaaaaay overpriced!
