Rain (Seasons with Granddad), by Sam Usher

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—In a suitable sequel to the author's Snow, Sam can't wait until he is "out in the rain. You can catch raindrops, splash in puddles, and look at everything upside down." Granddad and his young grandson watch through the window as drops fall steadily, increasing until the street disappears in a steady downpour. They wait and wait, one reading about sea monsters and dreaming of floating cities—the other patiently writing letters. Watery reflections reveal a post-rain world outside of the ordinary, with boats, boots, umbrellas, raincoats, and upside-down escapades. The young "Captain" of his boat greets a watery city of acrobats and carnivals while mailing Granddad's letters, a treat worth waiting for ("the very best things are always worth waiting for."). Sharp-eyed children will note the hidden watercolor and pen-and-ink images of toys from the boy's room—animated in the cartoon dreams of his adventurous thoughts. Written with simplicity for the very young, the text supports the wonder of imagination in children of all ages and the understanding of special family relationships between generations. VERDICT A first purchase recommendation for all libraries.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX

Review

Young readers will feel exhilarated by this altered reality, etched out brilliantly with lithe linework and gorgeous washes of color. When Granddad and the boy climb aboard a boat and encounter a carnival boat party, readers will revel in the expansive, exciting scene: goofy gondoliers, bouncing musicians, jingling jesters, a picnicking king and queen, a dark-skinned family enjoying teatime, flapping flags and pennants, soaring polka dots and stripes. Bright, colorful joy for the rainiest of days.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Written with simplicity for the very young, the text supports the wonder of imagination in children of all ages and the understanding of special family relationships between generations. A first purchase recommendation for all libraries.—School Library Journal (starred review)The simple story line is made magical by Usher’s watercolor-and-ink artwork, a mix of Bob Graham and Quentin Blake, but his charming elaborations give the pictures a feel all their own. This is especially true in the spreads that capture the blurry, mesmerizing moments of rain—and the sunshine moment when you step outside.—Booklist OnlineUsher is a storybook wizard, using simple first-person language to tell a story that resonates with children.—BookPage

Around these parts it feels as though April showers have carried on...and on...and on. Frankly, I'm surprised our May flowers haven't floated away by now. How appropriate, then, that today we should be reading "Rain" by Sam Usher - a colorful and wonderfully imaginative storybook that seeks to remind us that the very best things are always worth waiting for!Mr Usher's protagonist is a precocious little red-headed boy, who wakes up one morning to a rainy day. He can't wait to get outside, but his Grandad says they should stay indoors until the rain ends. "But I LIKE going out in the rain," our hero pleads. In the rain you can look at things (reflected) upside down, catch raindrops, and splash in puddles. But Grandad is not persuaded, and so they wait. The little boy reads sea stories, and the rain does not stop. What about a sea voyage with monsters, he suggests. No, better to wait. Sooooo, the little boy reads a book about Venice, and the rain does not stop. How about going out to see the floating city, with acrobats, carnivals, and musical boatmen, he proposes. And granddad, who has finally finished writing a letter, jumps up and says, "Quick...we have to catch the post!"Time for a voyage at last (and what a voyage it is)! There are upside-down reflections, and chances to catch raindrops in your mouth, and musical boatmen, and sea monsters, and acrobats, and a general riot of activity. Upon returning home from the mailbox and after changing into some dry clothes, the boy and his Grandad sip hot chocolate, and agree: "The very best things are always worth waiting for."The message imparted in this book is a classic; so very true, but so very hard to remember in the moment (waiting: a potentially rewarding but infinitely challenging predicament...see "Waiting" by Kevin Henkes or "and then it's spring" by julie fogliano). I particularly liked how the author foreshadowed the adventure to come with the little boy's reading materials, and I loved the scribbly, playful watercolor illustrations, a style that I think adds to the helter-skelter carnival feel of the eventual voyage. And, the very moment we closed the book, it started raining (again!) at our house...I guess I'll sit here and wait for MY ship to come in.

“Rain” ! is written and illustrated by Sam Usher. A boy delights to awaken to a rainy day. Plans abound in his mind. But first, Grandad insists in waiting out the storm. The oversize format conveys the boy’s frustration as we waits to embark on his rainy day adventures. Grandad and boy both busy themselves while the wait. Each activity the boy chooses, stirs up new thoughts of high adventure and an intensifying yearning to be splashing in the rainWhen Grandad finally relents, the boy exuberantly enacts his fantasies. He comes to understand how anticipation adds a delicious and intensifying aspect to experience. --Gayle H. Swift, "ABC, Adoption & Me: A Multicultural Picture Book"

I'm actually not a fan of this book but my kid LOVES it. I just can't focus on anything other than why the grandfather looks like Ben Franklin?

Rain, written and illustrated by Sam Usher, is part of a picture book series based on weather elements. Having not read the other book, Snow, I can only imagine it is as charming as this book. The first thing that will catch the reader’s attention is the cover of this book. The design is beautiful and has been created with a three-dimensional element so that it appears to have raindrops on the cover. The illustrations throughout are absolutely lovely and bursting with emotion as Sam watches the rain and waits for his Granddad to finish his small tasks around the house. The most surprising twist comes right at the beginning, when Sam is so excited to play outside in the rain. Many books often look at rain as something that ruins a child’s day, so it was refreshing and inspiring to see a book celebrating a rainy day and all the fun a child can have. In the age of electronics and indoor entertainment, letting a child play outside even if it means getting a bit wet is a wonderful concept.Sam and his Granddad’s adventures in the rain are fun and imaginative and way over the top, but it is a picture book after all, so such craziness is allowed. I might have hoped for a bit more realistic adventures in the rain, but the illustrations made up for any fleeting disappointment I felt at the abrupt change in setting. The change in mood and tempo from a dreary day spent indoors to an exuberant day in the wet weather was certainly refreshing.Overall, a beautifully illustrated, adventurous text sure to have every child wanting to go out on a rainy day adventure. Highly recommended for children ages 3 and up.Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Sam and his Grandpa are spending a rainy day together. Sam wants to head out into the rain, but Grandpa asks that they wait until the rain stops. Sam spends the time reading books, drinking hot chocolate and dreaming of adventures. Meanwhile, Grandpa writes at the table and eventually has a very important letter ready to put in the mail. The rain ends just in time for them to have the adventure together that Sam has been dreaming of.Usher has combined the tedium of waiting for the weather to change with the pleasure of escape into imagination. Sam waits reluctantly for the weather to change and yet manages to amuse himself without devices or television during the long wait. Merrily, the imagination and reality merge towards the end of the picture book, as Grandpa and Sam float directly into his dreams. The illustrations are particularly effective. Usher creates a crispness in the interior images, filled with details done in fine lines and bright colors. Through the windows though, readers can see the weather. Outside the streets are awash in smears of light and color, filled with rain and raindrops. There is a real sense of a wash of water happening in the street and the light plays across the puddles realistically and beautifully.A rainy day book brightened by a fantastic adventure. Appropriate for ages 3-5.
