Jack Robinson held his hands out to catch the ball heading his way. Jack was a young boy who would eventually make history, not unlike Rosa Parks. That young, athletic boy one day “refused to move to the back of the bus like Rosa,†but that’s not what most of us remember him for. Pasadena, California was Jack’s boyhood home, but it was far from idyllic at times. He could swim in a public pool, but only once a week. Why, did you know that it was “then drained immediately afterward and refilled for the white children who swam the rest of the time?†It sure was and there were many other “whites only†things Jack had to face.Even the neighbors wanted the Robinson family to move, but Jack’s mother, Mallie, wouldn’t have it. She “taught her children to stand up for what was right, even when that was difficult to do.†Jack listened and learned from his mother, lessons that sure would come in handy later in his life. In the meantime, it was sports, sports, sports! Mallie and Jack had high hopes that he’d make a career in sports. Not surprisingly, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) wanted him to play for them.It would be a tough row to hoe because “a lot of people still saw him only as a black man.†He suffered a lot of abuse at the hands of the coaches and other players. Not to worry, “Jack wouldn’t back down from anyone who treated him unfairly.†Jack was definitely a champion in more ways than one, but his struggles were just beginning. There were too many barriers for young black men and there “was a line that had to be crossed to play on a professional team—the color line.†His dreams would never come true, but could they?World War II had begun and college was left behind. Jack Robinson was one of many who “answered their nation’s call to defend freedom around the globe.†Unfortunately, segregation was something that came right along with the enlistment, something Jack couldn’t escape. No sports for him on that all-white Fort Riley baseball team. There was some progress when “in May, 1944, the army issued an order forbidding segregation on military posts and buses.†Jack took his seat on the bus and ignored “the driver telling him to go to the back.†There was going to be trouble, big trouble, when Jack continued to ignore him. Would this be the end of his time in the service? Would Jack end up in jail?This is a fabulous story about Jackie Robinson few young readers are aware of. Usually when I read a book about Jackie Robinson intended for this age group it tends to be about his baseball career. This portrait of Jack ‘Jackie’ Robinson is one that provides more information about the man and his outstanding bravery and character. Children too need to learn that it’s good to stand up for and believe in themselves and others, taking the high road. The artwork, rendered in acryla gouache, gave the book a nostalgic look. In the back of the book is a Timeline (May 18, 1896 to april 15, 1997), an author note about segregation, and a bibliography with additional book and website resources to explore.Age Range: 4 to 8 yearsGrade Level: Preschool - 3(Library book).
Jackie Robinson was an amazing, and well-known baseball player. Until reading story, I had never heard much about his time in the Army. I absolutely fell in love with the lesson of courage and standing up for what’s right. Jackie was put in jail for sitting in on a bus. He had to stand in court and hear lies spoken to the judge about who he was. Still, Jackie told the truth and won the fight! The text in this book is informative and easy to read. The illustrations are stunning and show readers the strength that Jackie had. The back of the book has a fantastic timeline and authors note which makes it perfect for book reports and research projects. A must read!
An inspiring and important nonfiction picture book about an event that happened to Jackie Robinson before his well-known baseball career. The text shares the story of Robinson’s court marshal trial that occurred when he was in the army. It describes how he fought prejudice with grace and strength, standing up for what’s right even though it was difficult to do.
This book teaches young kids that honesty in the face of ignorance goes a long way toward achieving freedom. I liked it.
