About the Author
Fr. Thomas Acklin, OSB, is a Benedictine monk of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He earned an MA in philosophy at Duquesne University as well as an STD in theology and a PhD in religious studies at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium where he specialized in psychology of religion. He is a psychoanalyst as well as a spiritual director and has been a professor at St. Vincent Seminary where he also served as rector. Fr. Acklin is the author of The Passion of the Lamb and The Unchanging Heart of the Priesthood. Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB, is a Benedictine monk of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He has provided spiritual direction for many men and women, including married couples, seminarians, consecrated religious, and priests, even while completing his PhD in computer science at Penn State University. He became the programming manager and an on-air contributor for We Are One Body Catholic Radio in 2010 and has recorded thousands of radio programs on theology and the spiritual life. He has extensive experience as a retreat master for laity, consecrated religious, and priests. He became the Director of Spiritual Formation for St. Vincent Seminary in 2016.

I would definitely recommend this book to any involved in spiritual direction in any way. It was a delightful surprise. The authors covered everything I had hoped for. I will be returning to these pages over and over.
This is an amazing book with basic and deep information on true spiritual direction, based on a relationship with Christ.
Love this book. It is easy to read and understand. An asset for anyone who is involved with Spiritual direction.
I highly recommend this book to those who are giving and receiving spiritual direction. To those who are receiving spiritual direction, this book offers a glimpse of what how God can transform them. There are several anonymized stories from spiritual direction that were profoundly moving and demonstrated the benefits of what this book calls, "vulnerable sharing." To those who give spiritual direction, I beg you to read this book. The souls in your care are in desperate need of love from you and this book offers concrete ways that you can provide that love. After parting ways with one of my spiritual directors, I spoke with him about the negative impact of my parents divorce on my current life. Issues that we had not explored in direction. He candidly admitted that he had received no training to handle the more complicated issues that I was dealing with. If this experience resonates at all with you, then buy this book so that you're better equipped to work in Pope Francis' "field hospital."
