I love these guides. They are perfect for younger children who can't handle a lot of detailed prose. The sketches are charming, yet accurate. The information is geared to what a child might want to know, yet it is complete and it doesn't talk down to children. I'm not sure why they included turtles along with amphibians, but that's my only complaint. Maybe they could have called it pond life.
I love this book, the illustrations are great and information is awesome. Not just a field guide also has fun craft or art ideas for kids. The back has a view pages to put photographs. At first I thought the back was for sketches but the paper is too glossy to do that. Overall this was a great book in our homeschooling when studying frogs, toads, and turtles.
We purchased this book (and several others like it, but different topics) for our grandchildren. My husband and I both looked at them when they came and we loved them ourselves! The pictures are great and the print is the perfect size. I think it gives enough information, but not too much information. It's not so long that the kids will get bored before they are finished reading it.
The pages are quite busy and so it's hard to wade through all the information. Also, difficult to identify the animals from the drawings. But, I may enjoy the book more as I continue to use it. Much too advanced for my 2-year old.
Very well written with beautiful pictures. My 7 year old granddaughter is an outdoor princess who isn't satisfied with merely seeing things - she wants to know what she's seeing & some information about it. This entire series of books does just that. Makes identifying very easy & gives factual information in just the right amount for elementary age children . Highly recommend!
It was a gift to my niece, she is Five. She is a outdoor little girl and loves nature. Her Mom home schools her and said she uses these series of books for teaching.
Great book for kids to learn from and will be more useful in the spring and summer when they can observe them. Lots of good information but easily understood by children.
Good addition to my fiction/informational text unit on Frogs and Toads. It is great for those second graders who love to "make collections" from their real life adventures.
