About the Author
Dr. Chris McMullen has over 20 years of experience teaching university physics in California, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. Dr. McMullen is also an author of math and science books. Whether in the classroom or as a writer, Dr. McMullen loves sharing knowledge and the art of motivating and engaging students. He earned his Ph.D. in phenomenological high-energy physics (particle physics) from Oklahoma State University in 2002. Originally from California, Dr. McMullen earned his Master's degree from California State University, Northridge, where his thesis was in the field of electron spin resonance. As a physics teacher, Dr. McMullen observed that many students lack fluency in fundamental math skills. In an effort to help students of all ages and levels master basic math skills, he published a series of math workbooks on arithmetic, fractions, algebra, and trigonometry called the Improve Your Math Fluency Series. Dr. McMullen has also published a variety of science books, including introductions to basic astronomy and chemistry concepts in addition to physics textbooks.Dr. McMullen is very passionate about teaching. Many students and observers have been impressed with the transformation that occurs when he walks into the classroom, and the interactive engaged discussions that he leads during class time. Dr. McMullen is well-known for drawing monkeys and using them in his physics examples and problems, applying his creativity to inspire students. A stressed-out student is likely to be told to throw some bananas at monkeys, smile, and think happy physics thoughts.

The title of the book is misleading. It is void of calculus problems for physics ( more to the calculus parts below ).I am teaching Calc Physics and was looking for a good collection of problems to have more interesting homework and test problems ( my books are from the 80s ). The title looked promising and the cover had an algebra problem that I regularly use in class. So, when the book arrived I was extremely disappointed about the "examples". The best way to illustrate is to give some:Example 41 ( the first physics problem, before only math problems )A monkey drives a bananamobile . . . .Example 42A mechanical monkey . . .Ex43A monkey drives a bananamobile . . . .44[..] a champanzee [..] drops a 500-g banana . . .45: A monkey leans over . . .Maybe I was looking at the wrong section. My current homework is on Angular Momentum, so let me find those problems:203: A 30-kg monkey is placed . . .204: A monkey is SO frustrated . . . .205: [..] A monkey underneath the table . . . .That was it for Angular MomentumSo let me do a "random" selection ( flipping from the end):148: Two bananamobiles collide . .146: A 20-kg box of bananas . . .141: On planet SillyMonk . . . .139: [..] while a 3.0-kg box of bananas . . .138: A monkey uses a spring . . . .135: A box of banas . . .131: A 200-kg bananamobileI am randomly opening problems. I did not select, other than leaving the math sections off - more to that later !!119: On planet Coconut . .102: A monkey grabs . .94: A box of bananas . .( So far, none of them had calculus content )83: An ape standing atop . .61: A monkey . . .46: Monk Jordan leaps . . .So let me come to the Math and Calculus:I found calculus physics problems :49: The acceleration of a chimpanzee [..] a = 24 t^2 ( I omitted subscript x )126: A chimpanzee exerts a force F = 15 y^4 [. .] as a box of pinapples . . . . . ( I omitted vectors, but we jsut integrated the force )127: A lemur exerts a force of F = x + y^2 [. .] as a box of grapes. . . . (I omitted vectors )Where the book gets heavy on calculus is: Volume Integrals to calculate the Moment of Inertia. ( To me this is the border between math and physics )Problems 194-198 cover pages 260 to 270Pages 247-250 just list (and graph) the inertial moments of various objects. ( I refer my students to Wikipedia, List of Inertial Moments )Center of Mass: another section full of integrals. In my view: more math than physicsThere are a lot of pure math problems ( the ones I omitted from my previous list ). Here are examples: ( I omitted int boundaries )153: Perform the [.] integral int ( x/5 -1)^4 dx154: Perform the [.] integral int (1+x^2)^(-1/2) dx155 Perform the [.] integral int (4 - x^2)^(-1) dxand so on.Summary:I am terribly disappointed.
Excellent service, super fast delivery.. item arrived as described in good condition. I highly recommend this book to all potential buyers.. it's easy to understand and is filled with step by step examples to follow. It's a must have. I'm 100% satisfied with this purchase!
Buy it! This is by far the best college level physics book I have read. The book explains in clear detail about physics and teaches you math and calculus so you will be able to solve physics with calculus. He teaches the math beginning with basic algebra, trig and calculus. The only math you need is some basic high school math. He teaches that too! The physics problems are challenging and can be solved through some brainstorming. In this book he has the solutions. There are two other volumes in the series. Great book!
Does a great job explain difficult physics problems using algebra, trig, and calc. I highly recommend this book if you are taking a physics coarse. You really don't need to know calc for this book; the book explains it in great detail.
Excellent physics explanations for any physics student!
Very helpful problems.
Useless. Wasted 15 dollars or so. I shelved the book because I dropped my calc based physics this past summer. Opened this book up after finishing my calculus 2 class this past week. There is absolutely nothing calculus based about this book. The least they could have done was explained how they picked the equations they’ve used in their examples. There isn’t much guidance to this book. Waste of money.
Great help for my daughter.
