This has been my favorite Christian guidance book so far. I started with Timothy Keller's The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness, which was an amazing short read. This book expounded on those concepts, and really led the reader to think about where in their lives they are self-focused in a way that distracts from Christ. Over the course of the last year, I've realized that my biggest idol is myself. I thought a lot of it in the past was related to things outside of me, relationships, preoccupations with phone and internet, etc. However those are all things that I used to serve me. This book is a nice meditation on the fact but I have parts of me that desire and need to be closer to God, and free from the slavery of my self focus. I loved it. I'll be reading it again.
This book has given me a lot to think about in terms of how I live my life. It turns common ideas, such as how God loves me, on their sides. God doesn't love me *because* of the way I am, God loves me because God IS love. Assuming God loves me because of how I am means that I could do something to change that. Our small group is reading this together and our conversations have been very insightful and thought provoking!
I love when God leads you to the perfect book at exactly the right time. Free of Me an easy to read, faith-filled, raw, life changing study. Many of us discovered we struggle with self-focus, self-preoccupation, self-esteem issues, and didn't even realize it. This book really challenged me in ways I didnt expect and helped me to realize just how much I make things about me. By being so focused on me, I've shifted my focus inward leaving me stuck moving in circles, and my focus should be fixed on Christ. Once it is, I can move forward with freedom, peace and joy! While you could easily read this alone, doing this as a small group study made it so impactful. Right Now Media has videos that cover a few of the chapters. Over the six weeks we met, the chapters didn't line up with the videos, but we read three chapters a week, and one video each meeting. So even though we had read chapters 9-11 one week, we watched the video that lined up with Chapter 5. There is also a Leader Guide provided through the website that covers each chapter. The only thing that would have made this better is if the videos lined up better with what chapters we had read that week and our meetings. Otherwise, this was a great study for a small/accountability group.
The author's realness encouraged me beyond belief. This isn't a book just about your selfish, sinful self. It's a book that shows the depths we will go to for true acceptance, and that can only be met in deep, personal relationship with God. As I read this book, the words leapt off the page and said "this is you....this is you!" as I identified myself in the analogies and examples. The end result is knowing and understanding that to be free of myself (my sin, my unecessary confidence, my people pleasing) is a beautiful thing. For an eye opening and convicting read, read this book. For a funny book, read this book. For a good cry, read this book. It's worth it!
This book is a must read for everyone. Man or woman, this book will impact you! I absolutely love Sharons heart and voice in this easy to read and apply book. It is an easy and quick read with wisdom on every page. I really enjoyed how well read Sharon is and that she includes so many other book references- my audible wishlist has grown quickly! She is humble and honest in a refreshing way! For everything that Girl Wash Your Face was NOT Free of Me IS!! â¤ï¸
This well-written personal journey brings great clarity to how much we all tend to focus on our "me, me, me." How easy it is to make everything about ourselves. As I saw myself in the many situations that the author presents, or similar ones, I often laughed because it showed the truth of the absurd amount of time spent on "me" - and how easy it was to turn even this book into "about me"!!When awareness comes, then we can begin to move toward something else. Free of Me brings the awareness to self-absorption, and as a result, opens the door wider toward living by Grace.
Great book. A friend of a friend didn’t want to read it because she “doesn’t struggle with self-esteem issues“ but this book is more about pride than self-esteem, whether it manifests itself as arrogance or insecurity.
Love, love, love the truth is this book. There are too many selfie-focused voices right now. This is a breath of fresh air that life isn’t about us and an invitation to live it out. Sharon is vulnerable and transparent in her sharing. A brave book that women need to read.
