This very thin book is nothing but a self-promoting write-up and advertisement for a now non-existing website that the author set up to make money. There is VERY little in the way of actual content. There is extremely little useful information in this book that a parent would need to know when they have a child using YouTube. I am serious! Based on the title and description of this book, that is what I was expecting from this book. The book is very repetitive. What irked me most was that the author directs the reader to go to his non-existing website for the real information the reader is seeking. Essentially, you're spend money on the book only to be told to go to his now non-existing web site. If the website did work the readers would have only been able to use the website for free for seven days, then I presume you have to pay a fee to use it (that is if the website actually existed). This non-existing website is mentioned over and over and over through the book. It was mentioned so many times throughout the book that half way through the book I began to feel bamboozled out of $15. In this very thin 8 chapter book the author urges the reader to go to his website no less than fifteen times!!!Sadly, I found very very little useful content in the book. I would not recommend this book at all. If you're thinking of buying this book, you should reconsider. If you want to make the author of this book $15 richer then by all means, buy the book. Better yet, how about if I save you the $15 by telling you what information is contained in the book in roughly 800 words. Here it is, chapter by chapter:Chapter 1 "I Don't get YouTube" :This chapter can be summed up in one sentence. It simply provides examples of how much kids love and use you tube and gives reasons why, as a parent, you should too. That's pretty much it.Chapter 2 "My YouTube Story": The author could have summed up all 10 pages in chapter in one short sweet paragraph. Did the author really need to spend 10 pages convincing the reader why he's qualified to write the book? Seriously? Mid-way through the chapter the author states how he doesn't want to be a you tube star anymore and how he bought a book about becoming a life coach, which is now what he really wants to be. A little ironic that some who no longer has passion about you tube is writing an advice book (or should I say, lack of advice book) about it. His lack of passion about the book's subject matter is evident in the book's lack of useful content.Chapter 3 "Getting Started on YouTube" - The only useful information in this chapter comes in the third paragraph. "If you have a Gmail address, you have a YouTube account. If you logged into your Google account and you click on YouTube, you will likely notice you are signed in there as well ..." The next 9 pages of this chapter mostly is about the various videos and content that is on YouTube. Anyone who bought this book already knows what You Tube is what type of content is on it.Chapter 4 "Making YouTube Videos" -- I thought for sure this was finally going to be the chapter where there would be some meaty content that would help me help my child start making YouTube videos. This chapter starts off by saying you don't need to buy expensive video equipment to make a video (ah... no kidding! I think we all know that with the quality of some cell phones these days folks aren't using expensive camcorders much). Then it describes the types of videos one can posted on YouTube. Wasn't that already covered in chapter 2? Yes, it was. Next there are 4 pages of an interview with a guy who had a video that went viral. Although marginally interesting, I found nothing about this that is remotely helpful. It seemed more like the author needed to fill up space to make the book long enough. Then at the top of page 63 is "HOW TO MAKE MONEY ON YOUTUBE". My thoughts were, this must be where the real meat and potatoes of the book are! Sadly, it was another disappointment. In the second paragraph of this section it tells the reader that Google runs ads at the beginning of your YouTube video and you, the Youtuber, share the revenue. That's it. That one sentence is pretty much the author's explanation of the financial aspect of YouTube. Honestly, I can't say that helped me.Chapter 5 "My Kid's First Video" - In this chapter don't expect to read any advice on how to make a video or edit a video or anything like that. This chapter simply says to get people to like your videos and to post videos on YouTube on a regular basis if you want followers. This is probably the most helpful info in the entire book but to be honest this is stating the obvious.Chapter 6 "From Idea to Upload: Gaining Life Skills" - This chapter repeats a lot of what was said in the prior chapters. Post to YouTube consistently and get people to like your video. Wait, wasn't that covered in chapter 5? Yes, it was. Very redundant.Chapter 7 - This is 10 pages of why you should send your kid to a YouTube conference.... so they can network with other YouTubers.Chapter 8 "Back Off YouTube Haters!" - The author states that YouTube's policy is children under 13 are not permitted to set up a YouTube account. This point is the only piece of information in the entire book that I felt I learned something that I didn't already know. Next the author directs the reader to read YouTube's 'Policy and Saftey'. Then remainder of the chapter the author gives examples of Hater comments and his suggested way to deal with them (to block them or to respond with kindness).At the time of writing this review I saw there were a total of 46 reviews on Amazon for this book, 43 of them giving five starts. Five stars!?!? Did these people read the same book that I did? There is no way anyone who read this book would could honestly say it contained any useful information to help a parent that has a child that wants to start a YouTube channel. After re-reading the 43 five start reviews I couldn't help but notice how many of them appeared to be the author's friends and/or fans. It feels highly unlikely these five start reviews are from people who bought the book in search of useful information to help them help their child with YouTube.I wish I could get my $15 back and the time I spent reading this!!!
I first started watching WhatTheBuck/BuckHollywood on Facebook when he was doing his show on celebrities. I have stuck by his youtube channel since and am really excited to get a chance to read his book.** Note: This book is available for FREE on amazon for a limited time, so you should all download it! **I liked this book. It was sweet and felt like a having a conversation with Michael, just like his videos did. The writing style helped a fast book go even faster and I fully enjoyed the content of the book. I have no kids myself and I watch YouTube but I still learned a lot about the younger generation watching/making videos on YouTube. His arguments for the pros of YouTube were respectfully stated and well thought out.
Great book! I think Jesse nailed it when he described his sister wanting everyone to watch her do cartwheels and then explaining that he - and other kids - want their parents to watch them do YouTube in just the same way. Throughout the book, Jesse explains the why of becoming a YouTuber and Michael explains the how. Thanks to that great team approach, readers learn why we would want to support our kids in this goal and how to safely go about doing it. We also get great insight into how this can also be educational and a parent/child bonding experience. I highly recommend this book to any parent of a child who wants to become a YouTuber, but also to parents of kids who are really into any form of social media.
Michael Buckley knows what he is talking about and I really recommend this book not only for parents/caregivers but also for anyone considering or starting out on youtube. It's important to be informed and to have support to follow your dreams, but also know the limitations and obstacles that might come your way. I have been a fan of Michael Buckley for years and was thrilled when I heard about this book! My daughter is 12 years old and is obsessed with all things YOU TUBE! She films things all the time, but I am nervous about her putting things up online. I found this book to be very educational and helpful in understanding how you tube works and making me feel more comfortable with the process. I am excited to put some of this knowledge to use and help my daughter set up a channel and start making videos to share on you tube.
As a college student, I am reading almost constantly, so when Buck first announced his new book, I didn't know if I would have time to read it. But I wanted to support him, as he has support me over the years with his videos, so I started reading and I am hooked. Definitely recommended for anyone who wants to know how YouTube ticks!
As an educator I see how engaged kids today are with both YouTube content and creation. So many parents and teachers find it challenging to understand, let alone get on board with. I'm so glad that Michael and Jesse have created this book to help adults understand the phenomena and encourage the passion kids have for YouTube in ways that will build communication skills and connection with the adults who love them. Bravo gentlemen!
A very informative outline that every parent of an aspiring youtuber should read! I just began the process of starting my own youtube channel in my early 40's and still took away some great tips for myself. Thanks Mr. Buckley for your insight and wisdom!
