As with other works in this publisher's series, this is must-have reference, especially considering the favorable price. Of course, it is most valuable when used as an adjunct to its companion text volume. Tackling an avifauna of this size, representing a sizable chunk of the world's birds, is by no means an easy or straightforward task and the authors should be commended for their gargantuan effort. I see a few comments about taxonomic changes but these occur annually and will effect any bird book for any country. Overall, the quality of the artwork is very good. The maps are small but with a little practice, quite usable. As noted, this isn't something to slip into your coat pocket, but in a country such as French Guiana, could prove invaluable in the field. I wish I'd had it in Colombia. For Guyana, the new Venezuela guide serves nicely and won't have you scrambling through a bunch of Andean species. That said, I always appreciate seeing how a bird fits into the broader context; so seeing congeners from other countries is of value to me, as is the number of paintings of subspecies, ages, and sexes. Both traveling birders and armchair birders will have use for this book. When I think about birding in Ecuador in the 1980s, carrying a stack of books that were non-illustrated, from peripheral countries, and threatened my luggage allowance, this book shines even more brightly.

I recently traveled through parts of Colombia with a bird photography workshop using another guide book specifically focused on Colombia but found its illustrations so crude as to be of little use. I am an experienced birder and know how to use bird guide books. When checking this first guide for birds that I did recognize I found that the discrepancy between the illustration and the actual bird was such that I am convinced that a less experience person would be unable to make an ID. Birds of Northern South America excels not only in the quality of its illustrations but provides representations of all relevant plumage variations, male/female/juvenile/subspecies. Of course this attention to detail and the large extremely bird rich area covered by this guide adds to the girth and weight of this book. But it is well worth keeping in your luggage to consult when you return to your lodge in the evening. One small, sometimes a bit irritating shortcoming of this guide is that it is not up to date on taxonomic and name changes that have occurred in the last decade or so. But this affects of course only a small number of species and will probably be remedied in the next edition. Having also traveled in Ecuador and Brazil I like this volume as a supplement to the otherwise excellent guide books for those countries.

I'll keep it short: this is a superb field guide. If you intend to bird in Guyana, Suriname, or French Guiana, it is a must. If you just want to browse the beautiful illustrations, it is a pleasure.

Simply the best and most complete field guide for the region. The diversity of plumages (subspecies, juveniles, etc.) illustrated make this indispensable for any serious birder in the Northern half of South America. Though some of the plates do not illustrate birds in totally natural positions (particularly problematic for the small tyrant flycatchers), the quality of the artwork is generally very good.

Great book for travel to Colombia, just a bit heavy and bulky, especially when considering Volume one is needed for the text! (We purchased their app for Columbia and it was the perfect companion!). It was a bit dated concerning taxonomy changes.

This book became available a year ago approximately in April 2007.. I arrived to Venezuela to the Neotropical Ornitholgoical Congress with it in my backpack, and sure it was useful... I took it to the Orinoco river delta and to the Gran Sabana/La Escalera endemics area... we (some people from Colombia, Argentina, Finland, Venezuela, Costa Rica, etc) were birding thoroughly and it was the right book to have handy... never "lost" a species and was very cool having all ssp and variation illustrated... of course, the book has mistakes and errors, but if you have been birding for some time and not a "juts-started birding yesterday" person, this book is going to be your perfect companion in the field !!!

A gift for a "birder" who asked for it. He's an exceptional bird lover and watcher and I know he wouldn't have asked for it without a lot of checking to make sure it was exactly what he wanted/needed.

This work is an exemplary achievement. Seldom have I seen such a beautifully illustrated guide that makes me want to jump up and down with enthusiasm. Not only are all the birds illustrated hansomely and meticulously illustrated, but multiple plumage variations are depicted full scale along side and juvenile plumages are also depicted. Also migrants from North America are given equal standing with the residents, and not shunted to the back of the book or illustrated in black and white. One of my biggest criticisms of many other guides is that they employ multiple illustrators with varying degrees of competency. Having one illustrator is an advantage, and one like Robin Redstall who knows and loves the birds he depicts is the best kind. This book is the next best thing to having private access to a great research collection!
